Alcatraz, often referred to as "the prison from hell," is a must-see destination when visiting San Francisco. Known for its harsh conditions, the prison was the final home for many notorious inmates, including the infamous Al Capone.
During our winter trip in 2023-2024, we had the opportunity to explore many fascinating places, but Alcatraz stands out for its unique history and atmosphere. As soon as we entered the walls of this maximum-security prison, we felt the oppressive atmosphere that must have weighed on the inmates, marked by a palpable morbidity.
For those planning to visit this iconic location, it is advisable to arrive early, as parking spaces are limited and expensive. Located across from Pier 33, parking cost us $48.
